History of Frost

In 1909, The Kusel Telephone Supply Company was founded in St. Louis Missouri. Kusel main business was assembled wooden wall telephones. Electricity was first used in St. Louis in 1878. In, 1918, Kusel stopped selling telephones and began selling light bulbs, drop cord sockets, flashlights, batteries, and knob and tube wire. In 1929, Cyrus J. Frost began working at Kusel and was one of approximately eight employees. During the Great Depression, the number of employees dropped to about three, and Kusel sold Christmas tree light sets imported from Japan to keep the Company going. Frost purchased the Kusel business in 1940 and he spent most of his time traveling by train to New York City and Chicago to reach manufacturers and purchase merchandise to sell. In 1948, the company’s name was officially changed to Frost Electric Supply Company and shortly thereafter Frost would publish its first catalog.

Ten years later, Cyrus’s son, Dale Frost, began working for the Company. In the 1970’s Frost Supply moved from the St. Louis City location at 2480 Locust Street to 54 Weldon Parkway in Maryland Heights. Under his leadership, Frost Supply continued to grow. In 1988, a second branch was opened in Collinsville, IL. Two years later, the Voice and Data division was created. Expansion continued five years later as Frost Supply moved its headquarters to our current location of 2429 Schuetz Road in Maryland Heights, MO. Dale Frost’s sons, John and Jeff, began working for the Company in the 1980’s before taking over their current management of the Company.
Frost Supply has continued its rapid growth under their leadership. In 1997, Frost opened its automation division, and a year later, added its 3rd branch in Columbia, Missouri. In 2001, Frost opened the 4th branch location in Lebanon, Illinois In 2005, Frost opened its 5th branch in O’Fallon, MO. In a nod to where it all began nearly a century earlier, Frost went back to their roots with a 6th location in St. Louis City off of Jefferson on Walnut.

In April 2006, the Frost management team decided to begin selling tools and fastening products to its customer base. Identifying a gap in our offering, the tool division was formed to establish access to all the products our customers utilized to complete their job. In order to expedite this expansion into tools and fastening, Frost Supply has purchased the assets of two Tool, Safety and Fastening distributors to supply a well-rounded offering to each and every customer.
As a result of the new Tools product category, we changed our corporate brand to be more inclusive of our non-electrical focused markets. While we have a strong history with our corporate name of Frost Electrical Supply Company, we utilize the Frost Supply name especially when related to our Tool, Fastening and Safety division which was branded with its own logo in 2015.
Over the years Frost provided supplies to major St. Louis landmarks including the original Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Arena, the Metropolitan Square Building, Union Station and numerous area hospitals, factories, commercial buildings, and hotels.

All of this growth and success is not possible without the teamwork of the employees that make up Frost Supply.
